Better Graham Cracker Crust

Graham cracker crusts are easy to use, sweet, and fun to prepare.  This is my preferred graham cracker crust recipe because the dough is more manageable than this Graham Cracker Crust recipe.  You actually make the graham crackers in dough form!

Ingredients

  • 1 C Butter
  • 1/3 C Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 C Sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp Honey
  • 3 C Flour
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Cinnamon

Instructions

  • Thoroughly combine the flour and cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside.
  • With an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugars in a large bowl.
  • Add honey to the butter mixture and continue beating.
  • In several additions, beat the flour mixture into the butter mixture.  It will obviously and quickly change to a graham cracker color, and form fine crumbles.
  • Refrigerate the dough for about 2 hours.
  • If you’re baking this crust before filling it, preheat the oven to 325⁰ F.
  • Divide the dough evenly between two pie pans, and press into the pans forming the base and sides.  You can also just fill one pie pan and save the rest in the refrigerator for another time.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes.

Refrigeration is an important, but not completely necessary, step for this recipe.  Chilling the dough allows it to be more manageable when forming it in the pie pan.  However, if you need the dough immediately refrigeration can be omitted.

Aside from being easy to use, this dough lends itself well to being flavored in other ways.  The Hungry Physicist imagines that a few creative changes could turn it into a gingerbread-like dough, or perhaps a vanilla-flavored concoction.  Go wild!
