A little food …
Any self-respecting Hungry Physicist spent last night on their Nintendo Switch until 2 am, meaning you probably woke up this afternoon just as Orange closed. Treat a trip to Orange like an exam and set an alarm! Words cannot fully capture the awesomeness of this restaurant, but I might get close to the mark. Innovation + creativity + spunk = Orange. They expertly guide fruits and spices into a culinary LaGrange Point, balancing sweet with savory. Orange-Rosemary French Toast and Tijuana Eggs Benedict are two of my favorites. OH, and try their Fruishi (fruit sushi)!
The atmosphere is open and inviting, and the decor is bright and fresh. Lots of big tables dot the room, but their proximity means group study would feel uncomfortable. The size of the napkins and availability of coffee, though, makes this a great place to conduct napkin science! Before we get into that, coffee at Orange deserves a special mention. Sure, they offer regular coffee … but instead try their bottomless coffee infused with orange oil. It. Is. Amazing.
A little science …
I prefer coffee black, but this visit to Orange made me think about all the other Hungry Physicists out there who like cream and sugar. Assuming you like your coffee hot, when should you add cream to maximize the temperature over time? Let’s consider the Stefan-Boltzman Law to find out! Very loosely stated, the hotter an object is the faster it cools off. The following bit of napkin science shows this relationship applied to coffee. Black coffee is the control.
When cream is in the cup before the coffee, our graph shows it stays at a higher temperature, over time, than the other two trials. Sure some assumptions were made to conduct this little analysis, but it’s good enough to conclude that for hotter coffee, add cream first. Enjoy!
